See You in 2014

It's true that we'll be open on Monday (till noon, re-opening January 2).  But, for most of us here at the Patrick Power, this is our last day for this year.  So this is the best time for us to wish all members of the Saint Mary's community a great holiday.  No matter how long it lasts, or where you go, or how much you eat, we hope you enjoy each and every minute of it.  It's called a holiday for a reason. It's been a great term - if the gate count matters, our busiest ever.  Which is a good thing.  And we expect to be just as busy next term.  Providing the things we provide.  Year after year.

Acadia Joins Novanet

For some reason, lost in the mists of time, Acadia was the only university or college in our province which did not belong to Novanet ( Nova Scotia library net work).  All of the metro schools, those further afield like StFX and CBU, all the community colleges, were all part of it.  But not Acadia.  Well that has (finally) changed. For the past week or so a lot of cataloguers and IT folks have been busy adding the valley school's records to the Novanet catalogue.  They are now full-fledged members and they (and us) will start to see the benefits of that right away. Apparently Acadia's great library had tens of thousands of books not owned by any of the Novanet libraries.  So all of them, and their entire collection, will now show up when you search the catalogue.  Of course, they will also be available for borrowing via Novanet Express (free, about 3 days to arrive).  And I'm sure Acadia faculty and students will appreciate the fact that the research resou

Extended Hours Beginning

It's hard to believe but the end of the term is only a few weeks away.  For university students, that can only mean one thing: exams.  Make that two things: the Library's open longer. Starting this weekend, and continuing until the end of exams on December 8, we won't close until  1:00am.  Every night.  And on Saturdays and Sundays we'll open earlier than usual too. Here's what our hours look like for the foreseeable future: November 12 - 17   Monday - Friday   8:00am-11:00pm Saturday 10:00am-1:00am Sunday  10:00am-1:00am November 18 - Dec. 8 Monday - Saturday 8:00am-1:00am Sunday  10:00am-1:00am So good luck on your exams, your papers or any other final assignments you may have to handle before the break.  You'll make it!

Inuit Languages Display

Image
The library is very pleased to be hosting a new exhibit from the Canadian Language Museum at the University of Toronto.  Speaking the Inuit Way highlights the development of native languages in Canada's north.  Its series of 6-foot panels combine to provide an informative account of the socio-cultural history of  Inuit languages and their current state and challenges. The Library has worked with the Centre for the Interdisciplinary Study of Culture at Saint Mary's to bring this traveling exhibit to Halifax.  It will be here for just a few weeks so catch it while you can.  It's near the elevator and stairs on the main floor.

One Book Nova Scotia Event

For the second year in a row, a coalition of libraries, publishers and booksellers have gotten together to organize One Book Nova Scotia - a series of events designed to encourage us to share the experience of reading the same book at the same time. This year's book is Fauna by Toronto writer Alissa York and the Patrick Power Library is pleased to be able to host a reading by the author: PLACE: LIBRARY CLASSROOM (LI135) DATE: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8 TIME: 10:30 We also have copies of the book available to borrow if you would like to join with other readers in the province as an active participant in One Book Nova Scotia. The novel is getting lots of positive reviews across Canada: “ Fauna  is the sort of rare novel that can change the way you see your world. Its cast of misfits and dreamers is united by their visceral connection to the forgotten animals surviving in the green patches of our big cities. This book is beautiful, unusual and memorable. And Alissa York is

Book Launch on Friday

In conjunction with McGill-Queen's University Press, the Library is pleased to be hosting the launch of an important new book this Friday, September 27 at 4 o'clock. The Grand Regulator: the miseducation of Nova Scotia's teachers, 1838-1997, by former Saint Mary's faculty member George Perry, traces the development of teacher training programs in the province, from their inception to the recent past.  Particular attention is paid to the role of government policy within the sociological history of Nova Scotia. As well as reading from his work, Dr. Perry will discuss the motivation behind it and the process of researching and writing it. This event will be held in the Library's classroom on the main floor.  All are welcome.

Need Your ID Card?

Your Saint Mary's "I'm officially a college student" ID card is a pretty big deal.   Not only for what it represents but for a whole bunch of practical reasons.   It's your library card and you need it to get your U-pass (free bus rides), to get into the fitness centre, to write exams (you wouldn't want to miss those!) and for discounts at movies, clubs, a whole lot of things. Normally, you would come to the Library to get your card.   But with the Service Expo taking place all this week (in Loyola 290), we've moved all of the equipment over there so that you can pick up your ID along with all the other fine stuff and important information.   Here's the exact schedule: Thursday, Aug,. 29,    10am – 4pm Friday, Aug. 30,          10am – 4pm Saturday, Aug. 31,      10am – 3pm Sunday, Sept. 1,          10am – 3pm Monday, Sept. 2,         10am – 3pm Tuesday, Sept. 3          10am - 4:30pm Wednesday, Sept. 4,    10am – 4:30pm   At that p
